Finely enamelled around the body against a bright turquoise-ground with flowering and fruiting double-gourd vines interspersed with butterflies, applied with gilt-metal bat and butterfly appliquies. 6 ?”. (16.5cm) HIGH Provenance:

The gourd and butterflies motif constitutes the rebus gua die mian mian, “numerous descendants”. Enamelled vases decorated with this design of scrolling gourd vines and butterflies are very rare, however a larger enamelled double-gourd of this pattern sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 29 October 1995, lot 629. Cf. also a Qianlong blue and white double-gourd vase decorated with a similar motif illustrated in Blue and White Porcelain with Under glazed Red (III), The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong Commercial Press, 2000, p.143, pl.129.
