This painting is illuminated by a powerful graphic design which uniquely combines traditional Chinese subject matter with Western watercolor technique and perspective. The artist, Lin Feng Mian (1900-91) studied in France, returned to China and eventually settled in Hong Kong. He is greatly respected as a trendsetting 20th century artist who also wrote prolifically about harmonizing the different qualities of Western and Chinese art. This painting is created in a square format favored by the artist as a significant departure from traditional Chinese rectangular scrolls and is an exemplary Modern rendition of a classical Chinese flower painting.
